A homage to the Japanese film composer and synthesiser phenomenon Ryuichi Sakamoto

The Bang on a Can All-Stars from New York embody the vibrant energy of American East Coast music. Music infused with jazz and pop influences, and the spirit of influential composers such as Steve Reich, Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe. But also music by our very own Louis Andriessen, whose pioneering work shaped the New York music scene. In this homage to Japanese film composer and synthesizer phenomenon Ryuichi Sakamoto, film takes centre stage.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, starring David Bowie, was Sakamoto’s big breakthrough in 1983. Many films followed, including The Sheltering Sky (1990) and The Revenant (2015). For the legendary album 1996, Sakamoto arranged his film scores for a classical piano trio. This added a new tonal colour to his appealing mix of minimalism, pop music and Hollywood romanticism. This album, rearranged for the exciting crossover ensemble of Bang on a Can All-Stars, is now making its European live debut.

‘Bang on a Can All Stars is a fiercely aggressive group, combining the power and punch of a rock band with the precision and clarity of a chamber ensemble.’ – The New York Times
