Eye-catching desert landscapes with traditional music and improvisations

The French bestseller L’Atlantide (1919) by Pierre Benoit inspired director Jacques Feyder to embark on a daring project: an eight-month location shoot in the Sahara. The stunning desert landscapes and opulent sets of this mysterious adventure drama captivated a large audience. The film was one of the most expensive as well as successful French productions of its time.

Maripepa Contreras composed the score for this film, performed by the Marmoucha Quintet. For the Muziekgebouw, she is now working on an arrangement for a larger ensemble. The dynamic soundtrack, which blends traditional music from the region with original compositions and live improvisations, mirrors the emotional ups and downs of the narrative. In the story, two French legionaries are caught in the web of Antinéa, ruler of the lost kingdom of Atlantis.
