Everything on Bruckner Casco

The thrilling landscape of modern Dutch composition / 13-15 sep 2024

2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Anton Bruckner, composer of nine beloved symphonies, plus a “Zeroth” and a study symphony. Reason for a three-day special, Bruckner Casco, though not all notes played will be Bruckner’s. The composer’s spirit, however, will be omnipresent, serving as a springboard for explorations. 

Ten composers, including Richard Ayres, Maxim Shalygin and Seung-Won Oh, have been writing new works inspired by Bruckner’s symphonies. The result is a vibrant tribute to the pragmatic and obsessive Austrian, while simultaneously showcasing the thrilling landscape of modern Dutch composition.

What to expect?

Ten contemporary composers will each adopt one of Bruckner’s symphonies and write their vision for an ensemble of 7 to 20 musicians.  They have complete freedom in their compositions, allowing their creations to range from a score-faithful rendition to entirely abstract works. All these compositions, ranging from 35 to 65 minutes, will be performed by the most vibrant (chamber) ensembles.

You will hear new compositions, total reconstructions, adaptations, and the completion of the unfinished finale of Bruckner’s Symphony No.9. This festival will take you on a journey to the colourful world of composition where old meets new, daring meets classic and west meets east.
