Djuwa Mroivili piano

Self-conscious performance by a pianist and style icon

In a musical theatrical performance, pianist Djuwa Mroivili examines the unwritten rules of behaviour within public spaces, such as concert halls. How do you ensure everyone feels at home in the Muziekgebouw? What conditions, explicit or implicit, underlie people’s presence in that space? Which sounds do we prefer to hear? Which rather not? And what is the role of silence?

Mroivili studied classical music and piano, but is not afraid to push boundaries in her music. In the performance Hou zelf je bek (‘Shut your own mouth’), she philosophizes about a world full of noise, worries and glitter. By viewing the Muziekgebouw as an extension of public space, Mroivili creates connections between gentrification, the exclusive nature of classical music, and silence.
