Grand and romantic versus new and surprising

Violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann and pianist Dmytro Choni fuse Schubert’s romanticism with the expressive sounds of Schönberg and Webern. Zimmermann, an acclaimed guest at the Muziekgebouw twice before, has been among the world’s top musicians for over 30 years. Choni is an up-and-coming talent who, with his lyrical playing and technical mastery, has been rapidly conquering the piano world since his success in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

Schubert’s Fantasy is a monumental piece, yet Schubert’s music for violin and piano is rarely heard in the concert hall. The same goes for Schönberg’s Fantasy and Webern’s Four Pieces. It is commendable that Zimmermann and Choni have included these challenging pieces in their programme. They promise a refreshing new approach.
