A wondrous rainbow of sound and colour

In Rewind-Forward, SCALA explores a wide range of repertoire, seamlessly moving between different styles. The concert opens uncompromisingly with the elusive, shifting sounds of the Carrillo piano (Arnold Marinissen), before delving into minimal music (Renske Vrolijk) and culminating in a ‘note-bending sonic adventure’ (Danny de Graan). The morning concludes with three premieres of new pieces by Bill Alves, Jed Shura and Jago Thornton. What all the music has in common: microscopically small intervals.

Ensemble SCALA was founded to showcase the widest possible range of new microtonal sounds. In addition to the Fokker organ, the concert also features a microtonal guitar and the enigmatic Carrillo piano, which is tuned in a mysteriously resonant 96-tone system.
