Raja Kirik

Met elektronica, metalen percussie en zelfgemaakte instrumenten geeft het duo Raja Kirik uitdrukking aan het geweld, de onderdrukking en het verzet die het eiland Java gevormd hebben. Zo verwijst het album Rampokan naar de kolonisatie door Nederland. Destijds danste men zichzelf in trance uit verlangen naar vrijheid. Raja Kirik toont dat dit ritueel nog niets aan betekenis heeft ingeboet.

Dans en zang maken deel uit van The Phantasmagoria of Jathilan, de nieuwe performance gebaseerd op de in de Javaanse traditie populaire paardendans. Hiervoor worden paardenfiguren gebruikt van bamboe. Danser Ari Dwiyanto kruipt in de huid van strijdbare helden uit de mythologie en de geschiedenis. Bijgestaan door zangeres Silir Pujiwati zal hij regelmatig interactie zoeken met het publiek.

With electronica, metallic percussion and self-made instruments, the duo Raja Kirik express the forces that shaped the island of Java. For example, the album Rampokan refers to the Dutch colonial times, when trance dances served the Javanese as an expression of their desire for freedom. Raja Kirik show how these rituals still provide means today to assert oneself against oppression.

Dance and song are part of The Phantasmagoria of Jahtilan, the new performance inspired by the popular traditional horse dance where the Javanese use stick horses made of bamboo. Dancer Ari Dwiyanto embodies various heroic characters from mythology and history. He will be accompanied by singer Silir Pujiwati, and at times he will seek interaction with the audience.
