Elmer Schönberger lyrics, piano

At Andriessen’s place

Elmer Schönberger wrote the book Keten & stompen (which translates as ‘monkeying around & pounding’) about his friendship with composer Louis Andriessen, which spanned four and a half decades. During this concert, he will read excerpts from his book. Together with the screening of the film Keizersgrachtshuffle – a poetic portrait of the house in which Andriessen lived and worked practically all his life – an intimate and personal picture of one of the Netherlands’ greatest composers emerges.

Two compositions serve as starting points: the music for Andriessen’s film Golven [Waves] (1982) and Schönberger’s musical theatre Verhuisbericht [Change of address] (1983). These works are alternated with more music by Andriessen, but also by Poulenc, Stravinsky and Bach, the favourite composers of Louis Andriessen.
