Delirium (S I M I L A R 4)

Zijn levenswerk, zo noemt de Oekraïens-Nederlandse componist Maxim Shalygin de grootse cyclus S I M I L A R. Het Minimal Music Festival presenteert de cyclus voor het eerst in samenhang: niet alleen klinken de drie bestaande delen tijdens het festival, in het slotconcert gaat vanavond het gloednieuwe vierde deel in première. Delirium heeft een bezetting van vier piano’s – in S I M I L A R graaft klanktovenaar Shalygin diep in de mogelijkheden van ensembles die geheel uit identieke instrumenten bestaan. Vier toppianisten zullen de ongehoorde nuances van klank en emotie vertolken.

‘Het idee is om de luisteraar geleidelijk in een staat van gewichtloosheid te brengen’, aldus de componist over Delirium. De piano heeft een heel precieze aanslag, maar door ritmes voortdurend te laten verschuiven ontregelt Shalygin het gevoel van een duidelijke puls: zo creëert hij een meeslepende muzikale flow die vrij in de ruimte lijkt te zweven. De eerdere delen van S I M I L A R zijn Lacrimosa voor zeven violen, Todos los fuegos el fuego voor acht saxofoons en Severade voor negen cello’s.

World premiere by sound wizard Shalygin
His lifework, that is what Ukrainian-Dutch composer Maxim Shalygin calls the magnificent cycle S I M I L A R. The Minimal Music Festival is presenting the cycle in conjunction for the very first time: not only will the three existing parts be heard during the festival, tonight’s concluding concert will feature the premiere of the brand new fourth part.  Delirium consists of an ensemble of four pianos - in S I M I L A R, sound wizard Shalygin delves deep into the possibilities of ensembles composed entirely of identical instruments. Four top pianists will play the unparalleled nuances of sound and emotion.
