Future SoundLAB

How can music and technology strengthen and innovate education in 2022?

23 November 2022, 9:30 - 18:00
Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Amsterdam

On Wednesday November 23, Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ and Gehrels Muziek Educatie will organize the Future SoundLAB festival in collaboration with the Centre for Arts and Sciences Education (CASE). This is a one-day festival in the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam with the aim of stimulating the development and innovation of music and technology in education. An inspiring day, full of performances, workshops and exchange of knowledge and experiences. By collaboration with educational professionals (in education) in music, music technology and design, participants explore and develop new opportunities for education.

Inquiry-based and design-based learning
The Muziekgebouw has been at the forefront for years when it comes to the implementation of music technology in educational activities. The heart of the education department is SoundLAB, opened in 2017 as an innovation of the Sound Playground, where children are introduced to more than 100 electronic and acoustic instruments and learn to work together creatively. The instruments have been especially developed in collaboration with sound artists and instrument builders for SoundLAB and are in line with the latest developments in music technology. This links the creativity of composing with new and digital ways of music making. The concept of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education and the approach of inquiry-based and design-based learning form the basis of the approach of the SoundLAB workshops.

Sharing knowledge and experiences
Science and technology are playing an increasingly important role in education. During Future SoundLAB we want to share knowledge and experiences that have been developed within the Muziekgebouw and beyond in the field of inquiry-based and design learning and the development of 21st century skills. This way, with the input of knowledge and experience from all these directions, a substantive substantiated step can be taken in the development of music and technology in arts/music education.

The Future SoundLAB focuses on three pillars within this theme:
• Teaching of music and technology in arts/music education;
• Building (technology-based) instruments and installations; and
• Performances in which music and technology play a central role.

We invite lecturers and students from programs such as teacher education/pabo, programs in music education, music technology and courses in visual arts and design. As a source of inspiration, sound artists and instrument builders are also invited to contribute to this day. During the festival there is room for collaboration and the creation of new plans in this area. The aim is always the applicability of these plans in the education and educational activities of cultural and social institutions.
