Suzanne Ciani

Suzanne Ciani is een van de pioniers van de elektronische muziek. In haar jonge jaren droeg de Amerikaanse bij aan de ontwikkeling van de synthesizer, met melodieuze en tegelijk onvoorspelbare klankexploraties. Nu is ze terug bij haar eerste liefde, de Buchla modulaire synthesizer. Naar aanleiding van haar nieuwe album Improvisations on Four Sequences geeft ze een uniek concert in 4DSOUND-opstelling in samenwerking met FIBER Festival.

Na een periode waarin ze vooral piano speelde en neoklassieke muziek componeerde, vond Suzanne Ciani in het vorige decennium herwaardering als heldin van de vroege elektronica, op festivals en bij jongere zielsverwanten als Caterina Barbieri en Alessandro Cortini. Live kiest ze al jaren voor quadrofonisch geluid. Optreden in de alles omringende speaker-installatie van het Nederlandse 4DSOUND is een logisch gevolg. 

Om de ruimtelijke geluidservaring compleet te maken, opent de avond met een aanvullend luisterstuk van Thomas Ankersmit, afgespeeld in 4DSOUND. Thomas Ankersmit is een Nederlands componist, muzikant en specialist op Serge Modular synthesizer. In zijn muziek werk zoekt hij vaak de grenzen van fysieke en ruimtelijke geluidservaringen op. Het stuk dat vanavond ten gehore wordt gebracht heeft hij speciaal ontwikkeld voor het 4DSOUND systeem.

Suzanne Ciani is one of the pioneers of electronic music. In her younger years, the American artist contributed to the development of the synthesizer, with melodic yet unpredictable sound explorations. Now she’s back with her first love, the Buchla modular synthesizer. Following the release of her new album Improvisations on Four Sequences, she will give a unique concert in a 4DSOUND setup in collaboration with FIBER Festival.

After a period of mainly playing piano and composing neo-classical music, Suzanne Ciani was rediscovered this past decade as a heroine of early electronics, at festivals and by younger kindred spirits such as Caterina Barbieri and Alessandro Cortini. For years she has been playing live with quadrophonic sound. Performing in the immersive speaker installation of the Dutch 4DSOUND is a logical progression.

To complete the spatial sound experience, we have included a great and complimentary listening piece within the 4DSOUND programme at the Muziekgebouw. Prior to Suzanne Ciani's live concert, Thomas Ankersmit's dynamic recording will be played. Thomas Ankersmit is a musician and sound artist based in Berlin and Amsterdam, who mastered the Serge Modular; an analogue modular synthesizer system originally developed in late 1972. Developed specifically for the 4DSOUND system and taking advantage of its unique architectural and compositional capabilities, we hear the Serge Modular syntheziser come to life.
