Nala Sinephro / 19.00 uur / Grote Zaal
In 1619 publiceerde de Duitse astronoom en wiskundige Johannes Kepler Harmonices mundi. Hierin beschrijft hij hoe de individuele planeten van ons zonnestelsel muzikale tonen voortbrengen terwijl ze om de zon draaien. Hoewel dit nu als fantasierijke speculatie wordt beschouwd, zou dergelijke hemelse muziek, als deze zou bestaan, zeker lijken op de composities van Nala Sinephro. Kosmisch en meditatief combineert de Caribisch-Belgische muzikant op haar debuutalbum Space 1.8, uitgebracht door Warp in 2021, mystieke synthesizerklanken met opnames van traditionele muziek en omgevingsgeluiden. Zinderend aanwezig in de bloeiende jazzscene van Londen verkent Nala de studie naar frequentie en geometrie en wordt ze geleid door de gedachte dat geluid alles in beweging zet.
Sevdaliza / 21.00 uur / Grote Zaal
Via welk medium Sevdaliza ook communiceert, ze maakt een eigen wereld die onze wereld weerspiegelt en destilleert. De Iraans-Nederlandse artieste benadert haar werk vanuit een multidisciplinair perspectief, waarbij ze haar autodidactische vaardigheden als zangeres, songwriter, producer, beeldend kunstenaar en regisseur voortdurend uitdaagt. Indringende emoties staan voorop in Sevdaliza's geluidsexperimenten, die voornamelijk elementen van trip-hop, elektronica, R&B en pop bevatten en vervormen. Waar zij op haar debuutalbum ISON – waarmee Sevdaliza wereldwijd bekendheid werd -–minimalistische breaks combineerde met rijk georkestreerde downtempo, toont Shabrang helemaal haar eclectische aard met gestripte en brutaal tedere ballads tot maximalistische popproducties met een industriële flair. Onlangs nog bracht Sevdaliza iedereen in beroering met Woman Life Freedom, een beklemmend maar hoopvol lied waarin ze solidair is met de vrouwen van Iran.
William Basinski / 23.00 uur / Grote Zaal
Wat is er nog te zeggen over William Basinski? Al tientallen jaren is de avant-gardistische componist/geluidskunstenaar/videokunstenaar een boegbeeld van de New Yorkse kunst- en muziekscene. Begonnen als klassiek geschoold klarinettist in de jaren 80, raakte Basinski begin deze eeuw – na jaren verschillende rollen te hebben gespeeld in experimentele bands – wereldwijd een gevoelige snaar met de release van zijn Disintegration Loops. De melancholische en meditatieve loops van oude muzakbanden die geleidelijk uit elkaar vallen vormden de basis van een radicaal nieuwe geluidspraktijk, geïnspireerd door mensen als Cage, Reich en Eno en reflecterend op onvermijdelijke existentiële begrippen als tijd en verval. ‘Ik ga niet de straat op om te vechten tegen al die gekke dingen die er in de wereld gebeuren. Maar ik kan wel een andere resonantiefrequentie creëren door mensen even uit de tijd te halen.’
Voices From The Lake / 01.00 uur / Grote Zaal
Voices from the Lake, het geesteskind van de Italiaanse dj's en producers Donato Dozzy en Neel, is iets om naar uit te kijken. Ook dit jaar op Dekmantel, waar ze tracks van hun onlangs uitgebrachte album laten horen. Het duo, dat in 2011 werd opgericht op het Japanse festival Labyrinth, put uit de ambient techno van de jaren 90 en creëert heldere, geïmproviseerde soundscapes op het podium. Ondanks dat hun uitvoering volledig elektronisch is, heeft hun kosmische geluid een organische, natuurlijke resonantie, die luisteraars meeneemt op geestverruimende reizen door donkere bossen of in aquatische diepten.
Arushi Jain / 20.00 uur / Kleine Zaal
Arushi Jain - ook bekend als Modular Princess - is een Indiase zangeres, componiste, producer, technicus en multi-instrumentalist. Opgeleid in de muziek van (Noord-)India vanaf haar zevende en geschoold aan meerdere muziekacademies, is haar geluidspraktijk geworteld in de kleuren en traditie van haar roots, en gaat ze verder dan haar akoestische instrumentatie door gebruik te maken van audio interfaces. Arushi Jain werkt voornamelijk met modulaire synthesizers en zelfgebouwde digitale instrumenten, wat resulteert in een volledig DIY en tijdoverstijgend elektronisch geluid. Na verschillende releases op haar eigen label Ghunghru, bracht de artieste onlangs haar debuutcollectie ambient synthraga's Under the Lilac Sky uit op Leaving Records.
BSS Live / 22.00 uur / Kleine Zaal
De in Amsterdam geboren, getogen en woonachtige BSS (fka Beesmunt Soundsystem) is een vaste waarde in de Nederlandse elektronische muziekscene en zijn opvallende sound heeft hem ook tot ver buiten Nederland gebracht. De Echobox Radio resident heeft releases op onder andere Dekmantel Records, John Talabot's Hivern Disc en Honey Soundsystem. Vroeger was hij met Luigi Vittorio Jansen een duo, maar nu opereert hij solo, waarbij hij het ethos van het project van avontuurlijke downtempo, ruimtelijke, langzaam beukende breaks, fladderende melodieën en zacht pulserende synths voortzet. Zelfs op zijn zwaarst en hardst is er een ongeëvenaarde warmte in de producties van BSS, omdat Jansen rechtstreeks de hartslag van dansbare muziek volgt.
Mohammad Reza Mortazavi / 00:00 uur / Kleine Zaal
Het is bijna niet te geloven dat de muzikale prestaties van Mohammad Reza Mortazavi het werk zijn van slechts één man. Met traditionele Iraanse handtrommels – de daf en tombak, waarop hij een wereldberoemde meester is – produceert hij een cascade van uitgesponnen patronen die eerder voortgebracht lijken door een computer dan door een mens. De percussievirtuoos heeft een revolutie teweeggebracht in de speeltechnieken en gebruikt zijn unieke behendigheid om hypnotiserende polyfone ritmes en verfijnde melodieën met eindeloze variatie te creëren.

Also known as "harmony of the spheres”, the text theorised that the individual planets of our solar system produce musical tones as they orbit the sun. Although now proven to be fanciful speculation, if such celestial music were to exist then it would surely resemble the compositions of Nala Sinephro. Cosmic and meditative, on her debut album Space 1.8, released by Warp in 2021, the Caribbean-Belgian musician fuses mystical synth with folk and field recordings. An exciting presence in London’s thriving jazz scene, Nala explores the study of frequency and geometry, and is guided by the premise that sound can move matter.

Whatever medium it is that Sevdaliza speaks through, she’s constructing a world of her own that mirrors and distills the world we all share. The Iranian-Dutch artist approaches her work from a multidisciplinary perspective, constantly challenging her self-taught skills as a singer, songwriter, producer, visual artist and director. Poignancy comes first in Sevdaliza’s sound experiments, which mainly incorporate and warp elements of trip-hop, electronic, R&B and pop. Where debut album ‘ISON’ combined minimalist breaks with richly orchestrated downtempo – and gained Sevdaliza global acclaim – ‘Shabrang’ fully established her eclectic nature, ranging from stripped and brutally tender ballads to maximalist pop productions with an industrial flair. Most recently, Sevdaliza stirred souls with ‘Woman Life Freedom’, a haunting yet hopeful song of solidarity with the women of Iran.
William Basinski / 11 pm / Grote Zaal
What hasn’t been said about William Basinski? For decades, the avant-garde composer/sound sculptor/video artist has been a figurehead of the New York art and music scene. Starting out as a classically trained clarinettist in the 80s, in the early 00s – following years of playing various roles in experimental bands – Basinski hit a global nerve with the release of his Disintegration Loops. The mournful and meditative old muzak tapes, played against each other in loops while coming undone in the process, formed the foundation of a radical new sound practice – inspired by the likes of Cage, Reich and Eno, and reflecting on inevitable existential notions such as time and decay. ‘I can’t fight all this crazy-ass shit that’s going on in the world by marching in the streets. But I can create a different resonant frequency, taking people out of time for a minute.’
Voices From The Lake / 1 am / Grote Zaal
The brainchild of Italian DJs and producers Donato Dozzy and Neel, Voices from the Lake are something special to behold. And this year at Dekmantel is no exception – they'll be showcasing a highly anticipated new work, performing tracks from their freshly released album. Formed in 2011 at the Japanese festival Labyrinth, the pair draw upon 1990s ambient techno, crafting lucid, improvised soundscapes on stage. Despite being entirely electronic, their cosmic sound has an organic, natural resonance, leading listeners on mind-expanding journeys through darkened forests or into aquatic depths.
Arushi Jain / 8 pm / Kleine Zaal
Arushi Jain – also known as Modular Princess – is an Indian singer, composer, producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist. Trained in the music of (North) India since the tender age of 7 and schooled at multiple music academies, her sonic practice is rooted in the colours and tradition of her roots, which she extends beyond the scope of acoustic instrumentation by utilizing voltage-based musical interfaces. Arushi Jain primarily works with modular synthesizers and self-built digital tools, resulting in a completely DIY and time-transcending electronic sound. Following various releases on her own label Ghunghru, most recently the artist unveiled her debut collection of ambient synth ragas Under the Lilac Sky on Leaving Records.

Amsterdam born, raised and based BSS (fka Beesmunt Soundsystem) is a solid rock of the Dutch electronic music scene, but his standout sound has taken him far beyond the Netherlands. The Echobox Radio resident counts releases on our very own imprint, Dekmantel Records, John Talabot’s Hivern Disc and Honey Soundsystem amongst others. Formerly a duo, Luigi Vittorio Jansen now operates as a solo affair, continuing the project's ethos of adventure-filled downtempo, spacious, slowly pounding breaks, fluttering melodies and gently pulsating synths. Even at his heaviest and hardest, there's an unparalleled warmth to BSS’ productions as Jansen plugs directly into the heartbeat of danceable music.
Mohammad Reza Mortazavi / 12 pm / Kleine Zaal
It’s near impossible to believe that Mohammad Reza Mortazavi’s musical efforts are the work of just one man. Taking up traditional Iranian hand drums – the daf and tombak, of which he is a world famous master – he produces a cascade of trace-inducing patterns that far more resemble computer-synthesised than human-made sounds. Having revolutionised the instruments’ playing techniques, the percussion virtuoso harnesses his unique dexterity to craft hypnotic polyphonic rhythms and refined melodies with endless variation.
