Lyrical warmth and dramatic flair

The young Piatti Quartet made an impression in 2015 by winning the prestigious Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. BBC Music Magazine praised their ‘lyrical warmth’, and their performances are known for their dramatic flair and rich tonal palette. As British musicians, they are dedicated to showcasing the music from their homeland. This concert presents two contemporary English composers with a ‘traditional’: Benjamin Britten’s First string quartet.

The Piatti has a close relationship with composer Joseph Phibbs. Their Phibbs CD was lauded with a five-star review in BBC Music Magazine: ‘Wonderfully subtle perceptiveness. The rich, mutual understanding Phibbs and Piatti share readily communicates to the listener’. The program concludes with Mendelssohn. Although not British, he was a frequent and welcome guest in England, particularly in London. He was only 18 years old when he wrote his Second string quartet.
