A musical stroll through 12th-century Córdoba

The medieval Cantigas de Santa Maria recount the miracles of the Virgin Mary, yet retain an earthly quality. Cappella Amsterdam combines the Cantigas with traditional Arab-Andalusian works that are still sung and played in the Maghreb today. The Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra delivers an authentic performance with instruments dating back to the twelfth century.

The Cantigas were written by order of King Alfonso X, also known as the ‘King of the three religions’, at a time when Christians, Jews and Muslims lived together peacefully. Their shared influences are evident in the rhythmic structures of the music and the themes of the works performed.
