Marco Ullstein Quintet

The winners of the Grachtenfestival Jazz Competition 2023! Featuring unusual instrumentation, The Quintet, a young ensemble, expertly blends jazz tradition with contemporary elements. Under the direction of vibraphonist and composer Marco Ullstein, the quintet’s music is characterized by its melodic, ingeniously arranged compositions, in which the members take turns shining as soloists. Tonight, the quintet is pleased to to present their debut album Detached Views (to be released on August 30th). 

The quintet features a vibraphone, tenor saxophone, guitar, bass, and drums. The roles of the instruments change in each piece, creating a wide variety of sound textures. Sources of inspiration are jazz giants such as Brian Blade, Gary Burton and Chick Corea. But there’s also swing and a touch of Ullstein’s classical background in the mix. In other words: perfect music for a summer evening.

Bad weather?
In the event of unfavourable weather conditions, the performance will be held indoors in the Entrance Hall, which overlooks the river IJ. 

Keep in mind: the sun can be intense and the wind can be quite strong near the water, so come prepared.
