LIONSTORM
Dana Linssen interview

Queer hiphop duo that doesn't shy away from confrontation

Lionstorm is the Netherlands’ first explicitly queer music duo, consisting of Ski and Stars. They have their own signature aggressive clownesque style and take inspiration from music in the horrorcore, reggaeton and industrial metal genres. Common themes in their work are queerness, female sexuality and breaking taboos. Their uniquely sexy and raw style is reflected not only in their lyrics, but in their performances, music videos, and merchandise too. This is at times met with resistance. Tonight, Lionstorm shows their own music videos as well as the work of other artists who have encountered censorship in their careers. Journalist and writer Dana Linssen hosts the conversation with Lionstorm.

Innovators are always condemned. It is now increasingly difficult for non-normative artists to share their work online. Users who do not appreciate this kind of content online report it in large numbers. Major platforms subsequently remove or limit the reach of the content. Even if this is unjustified. Reaching new audiences online is therefore more and more difficult for cutting-edge artists.
