Birthday concert for a legendary Russian pianist

‘Alexei Lubimov is a legend,’ says Alexander Melnikov, who is himself a highly regarded pianist. ‘His whole life is nothing but an uncompromising tribute to music, lit by the unquenchable fire that burns in this man.’ Lubimov was one of the last students of the legendary pianist and teacher Heinrich Neuhaus and accompanied himself pianists, including Olga Pashchenko. He will be eighty this year. Lubimov celebrates this milestone at the Muziekgebouw with his friends Slava Poprugin, Alexander Melnikov, Viacheslav Shelepov and Olga Pashchenko.

Lubimov's musical curiosity is remarkably broad and encompasses everything from classical to prepared piano, and from the Baroque era to the present. With music by Mozart, Schubert, Glinka, Debussy and the contemplative Ukrainian Valentin Silvestrov, this is a typical Lubimov program. A program that also offers the unique opportunity to hear Satie's ballet Relâche live, accompanied by a film.
