Laurel Halo presents Atlas

Alleen zijn op een onbekende plek: dat gevoel roept Laurel Halo op met haar nieuwe album Atlas. De in Detroit geboren dj/producer is op dit moment gevestigd in Los Angeles, maar verbleef daarvoor tien jaar lang op veel verschillende plekken, waaronder Berlijn en Londen. Sinds haar debuut Quarantine, door The Wire verkozen tot beste album van 2012, koos ze dan ook telkens weer andere invalshoeken voor haar muziek, van noise en techno tot pop en ambient. Atlas is als een orkestrale collage, neigend naar klassiek en jazz, waarvoor akoestische instrumenten op elektronische wijze gemanipuleerd werden.

Voor het componeren van Atlas verdiepte Laurel Halo zich in de klanken van de piano. Tijdens een langdurig verblijf in de legendarische Ina-GRM Studio in Parijs bewerkte ze haar eigen schetsen op piano, aangevuld met opnames van vernieuwende musici als saxofonist Bendik Giske, violist James Underwood, cellist Lucy Railton en vocalist Coby Sey. Atlas is Laurel Halo’s eerste album op haar eigen label Awe, na meerdere albums op Hyperdub en andere labels. Halo maakt hiernaast deel uit van de laatste formatie van het Moritz Von Oswald Trio. Ook werkte ze samen met onder anderen Julia Holter, John Cale en Metahaven.

Being alone in an unfamiliar location is the feeling that Laurel Halo conjures up on her new album Atlas. The Detroit-born DJ/producer is currently based in Los Angeles, but has spent over a decade stepping into different towns and cities, including Berlin and London. Since her debut Quarantine, voted best album of 2012 by The Wire, she has also chosen different approaches for each new music project, from noise and techno to pop and ambient. Atlas is like an orchestral collage leaning towards classical music and jazz, for which she has manipulated acoustic instruments through electronic means.

While composing Atlas, Laurel Halo delved into the sounds of the piano. During her residency at the legendary Ina-GRM Studio in Paris, she adapted her own piano sketches and additional recordings by innovative musicians such as saxophonist Bendik Giske, violinist James Underwood, cellist Lucy Railton and vocalist Coby Sey. Atlas is Laurel Halo’s first album on her own label Awe, following several albums on Hyperdub and other labels. Aside from her solo career, Halo is a member of the latest formation of the Moritz Von Oswald Trio. She has also collaborated with, among others, Julia Holter, John Cale and Metahaven.
