Lemma

De groep Lemma is afkomstig uit Saoura, een vallei in het zuidwesten van Algerije die deel uitmaakt van de Sahara. Stemmen en handen zijn de voornaamste instrumenten van deze groep zangeressen, die zichzelf begeleiden met spaarzame percussie. De karakteristieke muziek van de Saoura klinkt soms langzaam en dromerig en dan weer opzwepend en dansbaar. De teksten bezingen verloren liefdes, diep leed en roepen de profeet Mohammed aan.

Zangeres Souad Asla richtte de groep Lemma op toen ze na jaren afwezigheid weer terugkeerde naar haar geboortegrond. Ze verlangde terug naar de zang en dans die haar als kind betoverde. De unieke stijl van de groep is ontleend aan de vier voornaamste muziekstromingen uit de regio: zaffânî, hadra, al-farda en gnawi.

The Lemma ensemble, created under the impetus of Souad Asla, comes from Saoura, the Saharan southern part of Algeria. The music of the Saoura, sometimes slow and languorous, sometimes lively and swaying, remains recognizable by the stripping of its instruments and the place occupied by the body.

The voice and the hands remain the principal instruments of the Algerian singers, to which the percussions are joined. Serious or trivial, the songs are about disappointed loves, insomniac watches and torments, the elegies to the Prophet and the invocations of his family. Although distinguished by its own style and staging, melodic, instrumental and choreographic innovations, the Lemma group is inspired by the collections and repertoires of the four main genres of the region: zaffânî, hadra, al-farda and gnawi.
