Bach’s most beautiful choral music

Bach’s six motets are among the most beautiful choral works composed in the past centuries. The Netherlands Bach Society, conducted by baroque specialist Václav Luks, sings three of these vocal gems in this programme on the eve of Remembrance Day and Liberation Day. In addition, the concert includes moving passion music by Luks’ compatriot Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745), also known as the ‘Czech Bach’.

When Bach wrote a motet, he usually did so for a funeral or memorial service. We do not know whether this also applies to Singet dem Herrn. In any case, the work does not express sadness, but has a light-hearted, festive character. As such, solemnity and exuberance come together in this programme.
