Magische klanken en verhalen uit Mali

Dit dubbelconcert met twee Malinese supersterren vindt plaats in het kader van het Amsterdam Roots Festival. Zowel Sissoko als Koité zijn griots, hedendaagse troubadours afkomstig uit muzikantenfamilies uit West-Afrika die muziek en verhalen doorgeven van generatie op generatie Rondom de concerten presenteren Amsterdamse kunstenaars met roots in Suriname en Namibië korte performances met verborgen verhalen uit het koloniale verleden. 

Ballaké Sissoko heeft wereldwijd fans voor zich gewonnen met zijn magische spel op kora, de Afrikaanse harp. Hij komt uit hetzelfde griotgeslacht als de befaamde Toumani Diabaté. Voorafgaand aan het concert van Habib Koité en diens band Bamada brengt hij een soloconcert. De singer-songwriter Habib Koité is minstens zo legendarisch als Sissoko. Zijn Malinese roots verrijkte hij onder meer met flamenco en blues. Vaak klinkt zijn gitaar even rijk als een kora.  

Performances
Voorafgaand aan het programma wordt in de Kleine Zaal de korte film Future for the Past vertoond, een documentatie van de gelijknamige voorstelling van Sites of Memory uit 2021. Jennifer Tosch, oprichter van de stichting Sites of Memory, verzorgt het nagesprek. Speciaal voor deze avond geven Jomecia Oosterwolde (dans), Jörgen Gario (spoken word) en Shishani (muziek) een preview van de nieuwe Sites of Memory-voorstelling Returning the Gaze. This double concert with two Malian superstars takes place as part of the Amsterdam Roots Festival. Both Sissoko and Koité are griots, contemporary troubadours from West African musical families who pass on music and stories from generation to generation. Around the concerts, Amsterdam artists with roots in Suriname and Namibia present short performances with hidden stories from the colonial past.

Ballaké Sissoko has won over fans worldwide with his magical playing on kora, the African harp. He comes from the same griot family as the famous Toumani Diabaté. He is first in line this evening to perform a perform a solo concert. The singer-songwriter Habib Koité is at least as legendary as Sissoko. He enriched his Malian roots with flamenco and blues, among other things. His guitar often sounds as rich as a kora.

Performances
Prior to the program, the short film Future for the Past, a documentation of the 2021 performance of Sites of Memory, will be shown in the Recital Hall. Jennifer Tosch, founder of the Sites of Memory foundation, provides the discussion. Especially for this evening, Jomecia Oosterwolde (dance), Jörgen Gario (spoken word) and Shishani (music) will give a preview of the new Sites of Memory performance Returning the Gaze.
