De Braziliaan Hamilton de Holanda en de Zuid-Afrikaan Nduduzo Makhathini wonen aan verschillende kanten van de oceaan, maar zijn verbonden door de muzikale diaspora die ontstond in de slavernijtijd. Jazzmaestro Wynton Marsalis stelde de twee virtuozen aan elkaar voor. Dankzij internet en YouTube ontstond tijdens coronatijd Routes of Discovery, een suite met duidelijke Braziliaanse en Afrikaanse roots, beïnvloed door klassieke muziek, jazz en hiphop.

Hamilton de Holanda is een van de meest invloedrijke bespelers van de bandolim, de mandoline die de Braziliaanse muziek karakter geeft. Grote Braziliaanse sterren prijzen hem de hemel in. Met zijn begeesterde pianospel legt Nduduzo Makhathini de link tussen jazz, gospel en zijn zoeloe-achtergrond. Buiten Zuid-Afrika maakt hij naam met zijn album Modes of Communication op het jazzlabel Blue Note.

The Brazilian Hamilton de Holanda and the South African Nduduzo Makhathini live on different sides of the Atlantic, but are connected through the diaspora created during slavery times. These virtuosos were introduced to each other by jazz maestro Wynton Marsalis. Despite the pandemic and thanks to the internet, they developed a suite with obvious Brazilian and South-African roots, influenced by classical music, jazz and hip-hop.

Hamilton de Holanda is one of the most influential players of the bandolim, the mandolin that gives Brazilian music its distinct character. He has earned praise from major Brazilian stars. With his spirited piano playing, Nduduzo Makhathini links jazz and gospel with his zulu roots. Outside of South Africa he’s making name with his Blue Note album Modes of Communication.
