Cultural cross-pollination and spiritual connection

Everything is an encounter, in the words of the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra (AAO), and every encounter enriches our lives. Tonight, the AAO presents a taste of the music from Mystic, a dance performance by award-winning choreographer Shailesh Bahoran. In Mystic, the AAO explores music from a vast region, stretching from West China to the Iberian Peninsula, in a captivating quest for cultural cross-pollination and spiritual connection. Mystic will premiere with dancers from ICK Dans Amsterdam and Illusionary Rockaz Company at the ICK Fest in the Meervaart in spring 2025, followed by a national tour.

The music of the Middle East is characterized by its unique use of scale systems. These maqams do not only consist of certain notes, but form a complex of interconnected melodies, embellishments and spiritual meanings. Similar musical traditions exist in other parts of the world, from the Balkans and the Caucasus to the Maghreb and even among the West Chinese Uyghurs. In this concert, the AAO travels everywhere.
