A tribute to Umm Kulthum, who embodied hope

The Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra celebrates the legacy of Umm Kulthum, an icon of Arab culture, with a triptych. This concert immerses you in post-colonial Egypt, where Umm Kulthum played a crucial role. Her music, broadcast on Radio Cairo, was a symbol of hope and change. The rise of Umm Kulthum coincided with Egypt’s struggle for independence. One of her songs even became the national anthem, holding the title from 1960 to 1979.

The Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, together with international guests, breathes new life into this fascinating history. The orchestra has been captivating new audiences with rich musical traditions for ten years.

Najat Rajoui
The star soloist in this concert is Moroccan vocalist Najat Rajoui. With over 1 million Instagram followers, Rajoui is a prominent figure in the Moroccan music scene. Her career took off after winning the grand prize at the first International Alexandria Festival and participating in the Lebanese edition of The Voice, where she gained recognition for her performances of classic songs by legendary artists like Warda, Umm Kulthum, and Naima Samih. This sold-out concert at the Muziekgebouw marks her Dutch debut.
